Prompt: "Pharaoh" means "Great House" (from [livejournal.com profile] esmeiolanthe)
Rating: Everyone
Word Count: 360
Notes: This is so much a spoiler, you have no idea! D: But the prompt was so perfect for this scene from a future generation that I couldn't help myself. Up until this scene, you'll only ever see the ruler of Egypt referred to as "king" in my story...
My Card

-------------------

“Is it done?” Hatshepsut asked impatiently as he entered her chambers. He had barely gotten the great cedar door closed behind him when she was there with her arms flung around his neck. “Is Egypt mine?” she whispered against his cheek.

He moved back far enough to look her in the eyes, “Egypt was always yours, my dear.” Hati gave an impatient huff. He smiled and cupped her chin, “But now you may rule her as the sole regent of Horus.”

Hatshepsut’s face clouded and she moved away to look out the window. He expected a more jubilant reaction to finding out she was now able to take the throne unhindered. The controversy would linger, no doubt, but she was a capable leader and the rumors would eventually dissipate.

She turned to him, “Tepi, I am not an ambassador to the god, I am his vessel. I am Horus. Like my father was. I am not going to deny my own soul just to appease a bunch of stuffy, old-fashioned priests!”

“Hati, listen-“

She held up a hand, “No.” Then she placed it on his chest, “It is my birthright to rule as king.”

He sighed and gripped her hand. “Hati, it’s not entirely up to the priests. The people of Egypt must accept you as well. Never, in all of history, has a woman claimed to be king. That’s not even possible! The title itself is male by definition because Horus is, in fact, male. And you can’t claim to be the ‘queen’ of Egypt as you have never been married to a king of Egypt.”

“Then I need a new title, don’t I?” The corner of her mouth was turned up in that oh-so-familiar way and he realized she had entirely thought this out already, long before he arrived here tonight. He also knew there was nothing he could say to change her mind. This beautiful, intelligent, and bullheaded woman, who held his heart like no other ever had, was going to reinvent the throne and forever alter Egypt’s future.

He could not stop the smile from spreading across his own face. A new title it would be.

Glad the prompt was of some use -- very nicely done! And if we're talking generations in the future, I promise that I will totally forget by the time you get there for reals. :)
