Simspiration: Being interrupted while concentrating.

I don't have time at the moment to write, so I'm confessing to a copy/paste of something I wrote over a year ago.  When I saw the prompt I remembered this scene from my Egyptian legacy.  And really, this only vaguely fits the prompt.  :P  Anyway, this is directly from the story, and a pivotal moment for the characters involved.  It's a MAJOR SPOILER!  But maybe by the time I actually get this scene staged, you all will have forgotten it.  e__e  It's written to correspond with a storyboard, so that's why it's formatted like it is.  And this is only part of this scene.  I don't want to spoil TOO much.

Warning: This mildly alludes to sexual situations.  But it's plenty safe for work and all that.

Esi stood near the doorway looking around Narmer’s private chamber.  This was the first time she’d ever crossed that threshold and the room struck her as being a reflection of the man himself:  quiet, tidy, and smelling faintly of cedar.   She saw he was seated at his desk bent in concentration over several papyrus scrolls.  Why did that surprise her?

Maybe because she had imagined walking in to find him sprawled on the bed like an over-fed baboon surrounded by servant girls all glistening with his favorite scented oil, feeding him grapes and tending to his “needs”.  Her mother always said that was the only reason a woman went to a man’s bed chamber.

The reason she was here now.  Oh gods.

The presence of the man in the same room as that bed nearly made Esi lose all courage and flee the scene screaming.  But he had not even acknowledged her presence.  Maybe she could leave as quietly as she had come and he wouldn’t even know she’d been there.

No, she would go through with this!  Though if he rejected her now… oh gods, what if he rejected her?  No.  Steel yourself, Esi.

Esi meekly cleared her throat to make her presence known.  Maybe he would tell her he was too busy for interruptions right now.  He looked busy.

Narmer sighed and his voice was tinged with fatigue, “You’ve been standing there for five minutes twitching like a lizard.  What is it, Esi?”

So he had known she was there the whole time.  Oh gods, now what?  How does she broach the subject?  How do other women do it?  Should she simply disrobe?

Esi’s heart was pounding against her ribs so hard she wondered why the sound wasn’t reverberating around the room.  Her palms were sweating, her knees were shaking.  She had to keep her teeth clamped tightly closed for the chattering, and the fear she might vomit.  Don’t faint, Esi.  Oh gods!

“Esi?”  Narmer rose to his feet, “What is bothering you?  You look ill.”

He looked genuinely concerned and her face was suddenly burning hot from the overwhelming shame of what she was about to suggest.   She could not look at his eyes.  She addressed his toes instead.

“I … I want… a son.”

Esi felt the heat ease from her face with having finally said what she came to say.  Well, she sort of said it.  Still not daring to look at Narmer’s face, she had no idea what expression it held; if he was on the verge of laughing at her, or...

“That is a common wish” he said this so matter-of-fact, as if simply stating that the Nile was wet.

She looked at him then.  What did that mean?  Did the man misunderstand what she was suggesting?  Esi’s embarrassment was thoroughly replaced by irritation.  Gods, she was going to have to spell it out for the great bull.

“What I’m saying, Narmer…  What I mean is that I - that we” she drew in a shaky breath, “I think it’s time that I was pregnant.  I am the chief wife, after all.  The servants whisper about it, which is humiliating enough, but I’m starting to find it insulting that you have not summoned me to your bed.”

Narmer’s face went dark and he was suddenly looming over her in one swift movement.  She gasped and braced herself.  This is the part when he hits her.  Mother always said-

“My bed has always been open to you, Esi.”  His voice wasn’t angry, exactly.  He sounded… hurt?  “You are welcome into it without my insistence.  If it’s what you wish.”

Gods, she could feel the heat of him from here…

“Oh. Yes, that.”  Just then the vision of Zahra sneaking into his chambers every night needled her mind and put venom in her words, “Lately there has hardly been enough room for me in your bed as well.”  His eyes widened and Esi realized she was speaking like a jealous ninny.  Her face was on fire.

“Forget it!” Esi waved her hands, “Forget everything I just said, Narmer!”  Her annoyance and frustration rising with her voice – How dare he put her in this humiliating situation!  “I am a princess of Lower Egypt and you are causing me to behave like a common-“

“NO.”  His voice boomed.  She had never heard him use such force and it stopped her short.

“You are not a princess of any part of Egypt, Esi.  Do you hear me?  Not anymore!  And I swear to Ra if I hear you say that one more time-” She opened her mouth to protest this degradation, but he continued at a higher volume.

“You are not a princess of any part of Egypt or anywhere else.  Understand?  You are not a princess; you are the queen of all of Egypt!  You are the Queen, Esi.”

"My queen." He merely whispered these last words but they came down on her like a boulder.
